May 2. Feast of Saint Athanasius, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

Feast of Saint Athanasius, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

St. Athanasius (297 - 373), Bishop of Alexandria, Egypt, was a great champion of the against the Arian heresy at the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea. He suffered persecution, including seventeen years of intermittent exile, for resisting to compromise in the essentials of the Faith. He wrote many outstanding apologetical works.

Let us pray.

Almighty ever-living God,
who raised up the Bishop Saint Athanasius
as an outstanding champion of Your Son’s divinity,
mercifully grant,
that, rejoicing in his teaching and his protection,
we may never cease to grow in knowledge and love of You.
Through our Lord Jesus, Your Son,
who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

    1. The first of my seminary classmates to be ordained, Fr. Vincenzo Fiore from the Saulte-Ste Marie diocese in Ontario was ordained on the day of Saint Athanasius -May 2nd.

I pray he have the tenacity and power of will of St. Athanasius. Fr. Fiore is a fine man. His roots are from the area of Italy called ‘testa dure’ -so perhaps he is extra equipped to stand strong against today’s heresies.

Father, how does one identify the false teachings and teachers of our day?

  2. They are many these days, wolves in sheep's clothing. A true teacher of the faith follows Sacred Scripture as revealed and "canonized" by the Church, the Sacred Councils, of which there have been 21, the Tradition handed down from the Apostles, and the Sacred Magesterium, which is a continuity of teaching past on from one successor of Peter to the other.
